Late Goal Stuns Brave Jimmies In Ten-Goal Thriller

Heywood St James First Team entertained Manchester Gregorians at Phoenix Park last Saturday still looking for a victory that would move them up the league table. Lying next to bottom of the Manchester League Premier Division, Jimmies have not won a game, nor earned a point, since a 4-1 victory at Leigh Athletic on Saturday 27 October 2012. For 15 minutes of last Saturday afternoon’s game Jimmies were ripped apart by the quick Gregs forwards and could have conceded two or three goals but for the agility of keeper Neil Mcnulty. But two goals in three minutes saw Jimmies take…

Jimmies Are Punished For Inexplicable Lapses

By Dennis Booth: Heywood St James First Team went down to a heavy 7-3 defeat against fellow relegation candidates Leigh Athletic at Phoenix Park last Saturday afternoon. Jimmies had already beaten Leigh at their place, 4-1, back in October and were looking to repeat that victory to put some “daylight” between the two clubs. However things didn’t quite go to plan as the visitors had a physical presence that was to prove instrumental in bringing the home side to their knees with a powerful display of forceful football. Jimmies, thanks to a superbly struck shot from skipper Scott Hardy, led…

Heywood St James Honour Egger

Heywood St James and opponents Leigh Athletic honoured the memory of club stalwart Trevor Jones with a minute’s silence at Phoenix Park today. Egger died this week aged 67. He was involved with many sports teams over the years and is remembered with fondness by all those at Phoenix Park. Details of his funeral will come when I get them. Pictures and report to follow when I receive the details from Dennis Booth.

Diamond’s The Geezer As Jimmies Gain First Win

BY DENNIS BOOTH: The absence of regular management team John Barlow and Danny Dyson didnt stop Jimmies from recording their first victory of the season at Phoenix Park last Saturday as “stand-ins” Mick Grogan and Andy Nuttall led their charges to a battling 3-1 win over East Manchester. Neither side were at their best on a boiling hot afternoon but Jimmies, after going behind on 20-minutes, showed greater resilience and gradually gained the upper hand. Unfortunately neither Mike Weatherilt or Chris Nuttall – Jimmies leading scorers over the years – had their shooting boots on and, as hard as they…

Heywood St James 0 West Didsbury and Chorlton 1: Jimmies Face Two Crucial Home Games After Wests Defeat

Heywood St James stay in the bottom two of the Manchester Football League after a poor display at Phoenix Park against West Didsbury and Chorlton. Missing Mike Wetherilt, Jimmies’ main threat came from Andy Nuttall but the nervous home side couldn’t create enough chances and inevitably went 1-0 down shortly after the break, and were unable to hit back. It leaves them level on points with AFC Bury with two league games left, at home to Springhead on Saturday and then at home to AVRO the week after.

Six Off, But Heywood Rangers Hold Nerve to Claim Cup Triumph

Heywood Rangers beat Copperpot in an amazing Denis John Trophy final at Phoenix Park on Easter Monday. In front of a big crowd enjoying a day off, the two teams fought out a thriller. The game went down to penalties, where Rangers’ keeper Rawlinson proved himself the hero as he saved three spot-kicks to make it 3-1 to the Heywood side after the shoot-out, with the game having finished 2-2 after normal time and penalties. If this wasn’t entertainment enough, there were also six players dismissed on a busy afternoon for the ref, five on the pitch and one the…
