Exciting Celtic Survive Late Scare To Vanquish Stretfordians

Hooley Bridge Celtic’s multi-pronged forward line was too strong for Old Stretfordians at Heywood Leisure Centre. The attacking spearhead of Ellis Ridsale, Martyn Bennett and Johnny Lynch scored four of Hooley Bridge’s five goals as they moved out of the bottom three of the Lancashire and Cheshire Amateur League Premier Division after an entertaining 5-3 victory. It was 2-1 at  half-time thanks to goals from Bennett and the experienced Marcus Smith (from the penalty spot) but the bigger Stretfordians side were always a threat to the more skillful but at times lightweight home side. The game ebbed and flowed in…

Hooley Bridge Celtic Seconds Bounce Back, Stylishly

Hooley Bridge Celtic seconds bounced back to form with a 4-2 defeat of Trafford United at the Heywood Leisure Centre on Saturday. They were well beaten last week by Manchester Valiant, but were better for the extra focus and were too good for their opponents. Goals came from regular keeper John Ogden, presumably shoved up for a bit of bulk, John Harding and Mick and Paul Burke. It was a performance summed up in one word by stalwart Billy Hilton. “Pragmatic.” Ogden was forced into emergency service as a striker as Ste Keogh strained a muscle warming up and therefore…

Poor Celtic Reserves Go Down At Home To Valiant

A rogue dog caused a halt to play - and a popped ball

Hooley Bridge Celtic seconds put in a dreadful performance at home to Manchester Valiant 1st XI. The gulf between the two sides was evident, although at 1-0 down at the break Celtic were still in with a chance at Heywood Leisure Centre. But it looked as though none of the team had played with each other and they were totally outplayed by a good opposition team. They conceded two more goals in the second period, and as Billy Hilton said, the Christmas festivities seemed to have weighed heavy on the Hooley side. They remain seventh in the table, but have…

Smith Pulls Strings As Hooley Start Off With A Victory

Marcus Smith revelled in his new role as Hooley Bridge Celtic skipper, producing a magnificent performance as they recorded an opening day 3-2 victory over Hazel Grove in the Lancashire and Cheshire Amateur League Premier Division. Smith pulled the strings for his side from midfield, scoring the first and providing perfect passes for the other two. It was a quiet first half at Heywood Leisure Centre, although most of the threats came from Hooley, mainly through Ellis Ridsdale and the abundant skills of Martyn Bennett. However, it wasn’t until just after the break that Hooley opened the scoring and it…

Duke Make It Five In A Row With Turks Head Demolition

Duke Of Wellington strolled to their fifth successive league victory with a 6-1 demolition of a poor Turks Head side at Heywood Leisure Centre. Blake Roberts was a hat-trick hero for Duke, who were 5-0 ahead at half-time in a mismatch of an encounter. Two own goals and a goal from Andy Mullen wrapped up victory, and the only cloud on an otherwise bright day for Duke was when sloppy defending let the visitors in for their only goal, much to the annoyance of keeper Mikey Grogan. Manager Andy Renny was delighted with his side’s recent run of form, but…

Carden Special lights Up Leisure Centre as Crown storm to victory

Crown played some entertaining football to hammer Cheers Bar in their Bury Sunday League Millennium Cup quarter-final clash at Heywood Leisure Centre on Sunday. They hammered their opponents from Bury 5-1 to progress into the semis. Crown currently sit third in the Premier Division, just one point ahead of Cheers, but the gulf in class was there for all to see on a beautiful Sunday morning. Ryan Carden opened the scoring and then produced a wonder goal, caught on camera by Heywood Sport. He stormed down the middle and outpaced the visiting defence before unleashing a rocket of a left-foot…

Classy Howard Finish Brings Joy To Hooley

[thethe-image-slider name="PaulBurkegoal"] Click above to see slides. Lee Howard hit a stunning late winner as Hooley Bridge Celtic 1sts got back to winning ways at Heywood Leisure Centre on Saturday. Howard curled a right-foot effort past Old Stretfordians’ keeper to give his side a well-deserved 2-1 home victory. It followed a magnificent run by midfield maestro Ben Tanner, who ghosted through the Stretfordians’ defence to give Howard the chance to seal a famous victory. Manager Norman Kenyon admitted before the game it was tough times for a young Hooley side. He expected a tough clash against a team who had…

Kilcourse and Hutchinson Inspire Duke To Salem Victory

Second-half goals from Dave Kilcourse and Steve Hutchinson helped Duke of Wellington to a comfortable 2-0 defeat of AFC Salem in their FJ Williams Cup clash at Heywood Leisure Centre on Sunday. The conditions can’t have been any more different to the previous day, although the heavy conditions made good football difficult. Duke looked to have far too much bite and craft for their visitors from Oldham, and it was a miracle they didn’t score at least twice in the first period, once hitting the crossbar from long range and on another occasion the visiting keeper pulling off a couple…

Mellor Exploit Hooley Weakness To Edge Seven-Goal Thriller

Ashford Blake’s double and a great finish from Lee Howard turned out to be all in vain as Hooley Bridge Celtic went down to a 4-3 defeat at home to Mellor in a thriller of a contest at Heywood Leisure Centre. Tempers were sometimes frayed – referee Mark Verigotta brandishing a number of yellow cards – and the visitors certainly knew how to wind up Hooley, especially their aggressive number 6 who was involved in a number of skirmishes. It was difficult to pinpoint the reason for so many goals – was it good attacking play or shocking defending? –…

Hooley Bridge Seconds Fall In Top-Of-The-Table Clash

Hooley Bridge 2nds went down to a disappointing home defeat to title rivals Cheadle Hulme at Heywood Leisure Centre. In horrendous conditions at the Leisure Centre, it was the visitors who were able to cope better and they came back from a goal down to triumph 3-1. Bridge missed a penalty and in the second half were barely able to trouble the visiting keeper as the howling gale blew across the exposed pitch.
