Celtic Sunk By Bedians Wonder Strikes

Two wonder goals sealed Hooley Bridge Celtic’s fate at home to Bedians on Saturday. They went down to a 3-2 defeat against a side who are also in a battle at the bottom of the table, and once again it was frailties at the back that cost Celtic at Heywood Leisure Centre. They were missing first-choice centre backs, which meant striker Ellis Ridsdale had to be pressed into action, while there were call-ups for the enthusiastic Billy Hilton and Mikey Grogan. This left Celtic even smaller than usual and despite captain Marcus Smith battling hard in midfield against a bigger…

Celtic Thirds Fight Back To Earn Draw

Hooley Bridge Celtic Thirds fought back to earn a draw in a close encounter at Heywood Leisure Centre. They drew 3-3 with Chorltonians fourths, thanks to a late strike from Nathan Bates, his second of the game after opening the scoring. The second goal was a top-notch free-kick from Andy Nuttall. Hooley thirds remains second bottom of Division C of the Lancashire and Cheshire Amateur League. Next week they travel to face bottom side Santos FC Reserves.

Exciting Celtic Survive Late Scare To Vanquish Stretfordians

Hooley Bridge Celtic’s multi-pronged forward line was too strong for Old Stretfordians at Heywood Leisure Centre. The attacking spearhead of Ellis Ridsale, Martyn Bennett and Johnny Lynch scored four of Hooley Bridge’s five goals as they moved out of the bottom three of the Lancashire and Cheshire Amateur League Premier Division after an entertaining 5-3 victory. It was 2-1 at  half-time thanks to goals from Bennett and the experienced Marcus Smith (from the penalty spot) but the bigger Stretfordians side were always a threat to the more skillful but at times lightweight home side. The game ebbed and flowed in…

Hooley Thumped As Angry Howard Sees Red

Hooley Bridge Celtic were well beaten by a powerful Whalley Range side at Heywood Leisure Centre on Saturday. The reigning Lancashire and Cheshire Amateur League champions were too physical for Hooley, who were missing some key players – including the inspirational Marcus Smith – as they went down to a 3-0 defeat. Cards were issued with abandon by referee Phil Heaps, and most of them went to the visitors. However, the most notable moment of indiscipline came with the clash between Lee Howard and the visiting keeper. The pair challenged for the ball with Hooley only 2-0 down at this…

Hooley Bridge And Jimmies At Home Saturday

Hooley Bridge Celtic will be looking to make it back-to-back wins when they host Bedians on Saturday. Bedians are Hooley Bridge’s nearest rivals in the league, sitting one point and one position above them in the Lancs and Cheshire AFL Premier Division. Hooley Bridge fought back brilliantly last week to beat South Manchester 3-1 from 1-0 down, a win they really needed to open a gap between themselves and the relegation contenders. The reserves travel to rock-bottom Droylsden JFC in Division 3, while the thirds host Old Stretfordians on the second pitch at Heywood Leisure Centre. Heywood St James are…

Hooley Bridge Celtic Seconds Bounce Back, Stylishly

Hooley Bridge Celtic seconds bounced back to form with a 4-2 defeat of Trafford United at the Heywood Leisure Centre on Saturday. They were well beaten last week by Manchester Valiant, but were better for the extra focus and were too good for their opponents. Goals came from regular keeper John Ogden, presumably shoved up for a bit of bulk, John Harding and Mick and Paul Burke. It was a performance summed up in one word by stalwart Billy Hilton. “Pragmatic.” Ogden was forced into emergency service as a striker as Ste Keogh strained a muscle warming up and therefore…

Celtic Thirds Overcome Bad Start To Beat Parrswood

Hooley Bridge Celtic 3rds overcame a poor start to win a thriller against Parrswood Celtic 3rds on the top pitch at Heywood Leisure Centre. The visitors scored an early goal as veteran Jon Lumb’s usually well-marshalled defence had a shocker. But Ryan Carden equalised with a typically well-taken goal before Parrswood took the lead again. Aston Roger scored the first of two as he outpaced the visiting defence to make it level at the break. Parrswood only came with 11 men and the second period saw them falter. Carden and Roger scored their second and Celtic cruised to a 4-2…

Poor Celtic Reserves Go Down At Home To Valiant

A rogue dog caused a halt to play - and a popped ball

Hooley Bridge Celtic seconds put in a dreadful performance at home to Manchester Valiant 1st XI. The gulf between the two sides was evident, although at 1-0 down at the break Celtic were still in with a chance at Heywood Leisure Centre. But it looked as though none of the team had played with each other and they were totally outplayed by a good opposition team. They conceded two more goals in the second period, and as Billy Hilton said, the Christmas festivities seemed to have weighed heavy on the Hooley side. They remain seventh in the table, but have…
