Fitton Strikes Late To Pull Celtic Firsts Away From Relegation Zone

Hooley Bridge Celtic firsts continued their good run of recent form with a superb last-gasp victory over South Manchester at Heywood Leisure Centre. Richard Fitton was the hero in the 2-1 win, finding space in the penalty area to sweep the ball home after great work down the left flank. It means they have now won their last two games at home, and sandwiched in between a narrow and unlucky 3-2 defeat at unbeaten table-topping Whalley Range last week. Norman Kenyon’s young side are starting to show the kind of self-belief and team-spirit needed to stay in the Premier Division…

Nuttall And Rush Doubles Lead Celtic Thirds To 7-1 Victory

A quick-fire four-goal burst early into the second-half saw Hooley Bridge Celtic 3rds hammer Old Stretfordians 7-1 on a shabby Heywood Leisure Centre pitch. A brace apiece from Anthony Nuttall and Tom Rush were the cornerstone of a victory that was well-deserved. Celtic opened the score in the first half through what a fortunate strike from Nuttall. Rush put Celtic further ahead shortly after the break after great work from Anthony Bradley before Nuttall scored the goal of the game, cutting in from the left to curl a shot over a stranded Strets’ keeper. An own goal followed before Rush…

Winter Raises Temperatures As Jimmies Come From Behind

The TV cameras came to Phoenix Park on Saturday – but the star of the show wasn’t quite who the cameras wanted. MUTV came to watch AFC Monton full-back George Switzer in action against Heywood St James. Switzer was in the same Manchester United youth team as David Beckham et al. But it was Craig Winter, back in the team after a prolonged absence through injury, who stole the show and led Jimmies to a much-needed 2-1 victory. Jimmies went behind to an early penalty and never looked like troubling the visiting keeper. But harsh words were said at the…

Get Behind Your Local Teams – Three At Home On Saturday

There’s no excuses not to support your local teams this weekend – especially on Saturday as three teams are within 400 yards of each other! Hooley Bridge Celtic face a crunch clash in their bid to stay in the Premier League of the Lancashire And Cheshire Amateur League. Celtic sit just two points above Chorltonians, who occupy the bottom two spots along with Hazel Grove (tables in sidebar). They entertain South Manchester at the Leisure Centre in a 2.30pm kick-off. Souths are the team immediately above Celtic, but have played four games less. However, it’s a game they must feel…

BGSOB Suffer At Hands Of Old Chads

Pictures from the game between Old Chaddertonians and Bury Grammar School Old Boys at Hopwood Hall on Saturday. Top-of-the-table BGSOB went down to a 3-2 defeat in a game where the Old Boys failed to use their pace out wide to capitalise on the early goal that gave them the lead. Tempers frayed towards the end. Enjoy the pictures.

Lancs And Cheshire Amateur League Results 02/03/12

March 4, 2012

A mixed weekend for Hooley Bridge Celtic teams in the Lancashire and Cheshire Amateur League. The first XI couldn’t build on last week’s defeat of Old Stretfordians as they went down to a 3-2 defeat at Whalley Range, a defeat that keeps them third bottom of the Premier Division. The seconds recorded an excellent 3-1 in at Fletcher Moss to keep their title charge on track, while the thirds slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Moston Brook Thirds.

Duke Show Battling Spirit To Fend Off Physical Wanderers

Duke Of Wellington dug deep into their reserves to claim a deserved 1-0 victory over Whitworth Wanderers at Heywood Leisure Centre on Sunday. The winning goal came from the cultured boot of Alan ‘The Boulder’ Horan, with an early penalty. They were indebted to another battling performance at the back, with Lee Bates and Steve Hutchinson again to the fore, and Mikey Grogan pulling off a number of scrambling saves. It makes it two wins in two for Duke in the FJ Williams Cup after they saw off Oldham side Salem last week, and gives them a great chance of…

Frustration For Hooley As Late Error Costs A Point

Frustration For Hooley As Late Error Costs A Point

A late blunder cost Hooley Bridge Celtic 3rds dearly as they went down 2-1 at Heywood Leisure Centre to Staley Lions. They looked like they had done enough to secure a point in another hard-fought encounter on the boggy top pitch at Starkey Street. They came back from 1-0 down thanks to an opportunist strike from Tom Rush, via a Mikey Grogan hoof downfield, and on a gloomy day looked to be on course for at least a point. But a late error from a thrown in left Grogan exposed and Staley went back to Tameside with the points. The…

Classy Howard Finish Brings Joy To Hooley

[thethe-image-slider name="PaulBurkegoal"] Click above to see slides. Lee Howard hit a stunning late winner as Hooley Bridge Celtic 1sts got back to winning ways at Heywood Leisure Centre on Saturday. Howard curled a right-foot effort past Old Stretfordians’ keeper to give his side a well-deserved 2-1 home victory. It followed a magnificent run by midfield maestro Ben Tanner, who ghosted through the Stretfordians’ defence to give Howard the chance to seal a famous victory. Manager Norman Kenyon admitted before the game it was tough times for a young Hooley side. He expected a tough clash against a team who had…

Kilcourse and Hutchinson Inspire Duke To Salem Victory

Second-half goals from Dave Kilcourse and Steve Hutchinson helped Duke of Wellington to a comfortable 2-0 defeat of AFC Salem in their FJ Williams Cup clash at Heywood Leisure Centre on Sunday. The conditions can’t have been any more different to the previous day, although the heavy conditions made good football difficult. Duke looked to have far too much bite and craft for their visitors from Oldham, and it was a miracle they didn’t score at least twice in the first period, once hitting the crossbar from long range and on another occasion the visiting keeper pulling off a couple…

Hooley Thirds Struggle In Face Of First-Half Gale

Playing into a first-half, howling gale didn’t do any favours to Hooley Bridge Celtic thirds at home to Irlam Steel in the cup on Saturday. Hooley had won a previous cup clash against their Manchester visitors, but the game was ruled null and void because of problems with the number of subs named by Hooley. However, it was a complete case of roles reversal as Irlam inflicted a 5-1 battering on Hooley at Heywood Leisure Centre. Keeper Mikey Grogan found he could barely clear the ball past half-way such was the force of the wind and Irlam exploited their pace…

Weakened Hooley Struggle In Poor Conditions Against Villa

Weakened Hooley Struggle In Poor Conditions Against Villa

Hooley Bridge Celtics firsts were on the wrong side of a 5-1 thrashing at Heywood Leisure Centre on Saturday. They found visitors Cheadle Hulme Villa too strong and too committed in atrocious conditions that included a howling wind and some shocking hail. Hooley were without their star striker Ashford Blake – who didn’t turn up – and they lacked his pace and menace in the left wing-forward position and they far too often struggled to offer an attacking threat. Hooley’s problems came out wide, where they have been exposed too often in recent times. They went down 2-0 early on…

Mellor Exploit Hooley Weakness To Edge Seven-Goal Thriller

Ashford Blake’s double and a great finish from Lee Howard turned out to be all in vain as Hooley Bridge Celtic went down to a 4-3 defeat at home to Mellor in a thriller of a contest at Heywood Leisure Centre. Tempers were sometimes frayed – referee Mark Verigotta brandishing a number of yellow cards – and the visitors certainly knew how to wind up Hooley, especially their aggressive number 6 who was involved in a number of skirmishes. It was difficult to pinpoint the reason for so many goals – was it good attacking play or shocking defending? –…

Hooley Bridge Seconds Fall In Top-Of-The-Table Clash

Hooley Bridge 2nds went down to a disappointing home defeat to title rivals Cheadle Hulme at Heywood Leisure Centre. In horrendous conditions at the Leisure Centre, it was the visitors who were able to cope better and they came back from a goal down to triumph 3-1. Bridge missed a penalty and in the second half were barely able to trouble the visiting keeper as the howling gale blew across the exposed pitch.
