Heywood St James 2 Springhead 4: Unlucky Jimmies Relegated Despite Gritty Display

BY DENNIS BOOTH: Heywood St James AFC First XI suffered a double defeat last week and, as a result, were relegated from the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League Premier Division. After the 0-1 defeat at the hands of West Didsbury and Chorlton the previous Saturday, Jimmies hosted Oldham-based Springhead last Saturday and, despite a plucky performance, Jimmies again had little luck losing 4-2. With only one league game remaining Jimmies are rock bottom and will return to the First Division. A Mike Weatherilt penalty and a late Chris Nuttall cracker came too late in a game that saw splendid performances by…

Hooley Secure Survival With Great Away Victory

Hooley Bridge Celtic confirmed their place in the top flight of the Lancashire and  Cheshire Amateur League with a 2-1 victory at Chorltonians. The victory leaves them six points clear of Hazel Grove with the Stockport team having two games to go and one in hand of Hooley. However, goal difference is so in favour of the Heywood side that only a ridiculous couple of results can see Celtic overhauled.

Heywood St James 0 West Didsbury and Chorlton 1: Jimmies Face Two Crucial Home Games After Wests Defeat

Heywood St James stay in the bottom two of the Manchester Football League after a poor display at Phoenix Park against West Didsbury and Chorlton. Missing Mike Wetherilt, Jimmies’ main threat came from Andy Nuttall but the nervous home side couldn’t create enough chances and inevitably went 1-0 down shortly after the break, and were unable to hit back. It leaves them level on points with AFC Bury with two league games left, at home to Springhead on Saturday and then at home to AVRO the week after.

Rampant Seconds Keep Hooley Title Challenge (Just) On Track

Marcus Smith’s hat-trick and a double from Chris Roach kept Hooley Bridge Celtic 2nds push for league glory alive at Heywood Leisure Centre on Saturday. They hammered Fletcher Moss 7-0 in a game that was reduced to a stroll after the visiting side’s aggressive midfielder was shown two yellows in 30 seconds after criticising the referee’s decision. He then proceeded to threaten to ‘smash your face in’ to the referee as he walked off the pitch. Roach had put Hooley ahead by the stage and from then on it was a walk in the park. The other goals came from…

Seconds Rock Phoenix Park With Four Goal Show

With the first team having no game, the spotlight fell on Heywood St James Reserves recently when they hosted second in table Hollinwood Reserves – and they didn’t disappoint. Jimmies started brightly and went in front through Joe Wilshere, who got on the end of James Sweatman’s superb low cross. Twenty minutes later Jimmies doubled their lead, Jay Benson hammering home a loose ball. Kyle Warwick added a third on the stoke of half-time when he powered home a header from Sweatman’s corner. The second half was more even but the visitors failed to trouble Chris Booth in Jimmies’ goal.…

Six Off, But Heywood Rangers Hold Nerve to Claim Cup Triumph

Heywood Rangers beat Copperpot in an amazing Denis John Trophy final at Phoenix Park on Easter Monday. In front of a big crowd enjoying a day off, the two teams fought out a thriller. The game went down to penalties, where Rangers’ keeper Rawlinson proved himself the hero as he saved three spot-kicks to make it 3-1 to the Heywood side after the shoot-out, with the game having finished 2-2 after normal time and penalties. If this wasn’t entertainment enough, there were also six players dismissed on a busy afternoon for the ref, five on the pitch and one the…

Dismal Seconds Put In A Tame Performance

Hooley Bridge Celtic seconds stayed top of Division A of the Lancashire and Cheshire League despite a dismal performance at home to Spurley Hey on Saturday at Queen’s Park. They went down to a 3-0 defeat and never threatened the visitors in the second period. However, they are still ahead of Cheadle Hulme Villa on goal difference, although the South Manchester team do have a game in hand.

Mellor Hold All The Aces To Crush Celtic Firsts In Cup

Mellor Hold All The Aces To Crush Celtic Firsts In Cup

It was a day to forget for Hooley Bridge 1sts at home to Mellor in their cup clash. They crashed to a 3-0 home defeat at Heywood Leisure Centre after missing a string of chances in the first period, and then failing to compete in the second. Instead of using their pace out wide, Hooley insisted on playing down the middle, which was right into the hands of the Mellor defence. Their nearest rivals for the final relegation spot – Chorltonians – could only draw their league match and they remain three points in behind in second bottom but with…

Wetherilt sees Red as Jimmies Held at Home

THANKS TO DENNIS BOOTH: Mike Wetherilt went from hero to villain as Heywood St James battled to a valuable point at home to Dukinfield Town in the Manchester Football League. Wetherilt continued his fine form with another two goals in the 2-2 draw, but was sent off after the final whistle of an intense game. Jimmies went in front after four minutes, Weatherilt driving home after Chris Nuttall’s shot rebounded off the keeper. Dukinfield equalised 15 mins later with a great looping header at the far post back past the keeper. Within five minutes, Jimmies regained the lead. Nuttall again played…

Crown Put Spoke In Waggonmakers’ Wheels

Crown made mincemeat of Waggonmakers’ unbeaten record with a superb performance at Heywood Leisure Centre. Unbeaten in the best part of two seasons, the Bury side were no match for a Crown side who were backed to the hilt by a vocal home support in their Bury Sunday League clash. Ryan Carden hit his second successive hat-trick and Callum Heap bagged the other as the Heywood side battled to a 4-2 victory. It looked like it would be easy going for Crown as they strolled into a 3-0 lead thanks to Carden’s first-half hat-trick. But Waggonmakers battled back to make…

Duke Make It Five In A Row With Turks Head Demolition

Duke Of Wellington strolled to their fifth successive league victory with a 6-1 demolition of a poor Turks Head side at Heywood Leisure Centre. Blake Roberts was a hat-trick hero for Duke, who were 5-0 ahead at half-time in a mismatch of an encounter. Two own goals and a goal from Andy Mullen wrapped up victory, and the only cloud on an otherwise bright day for Duke was when sloppy defending let the visitors in for their only goal, much to the annoyance of keeper Mikey Grogan. Manager Andy Renny was delighted with his side’s recent run of form, but…

Carden Special lights Up Leisure Centre as Crown storm to victory

Crown played some entertaining football to hammer Cheers Bar in their Bury Sunday League Millennium Cup quarter-final clash at Heywood Leisure Centre on Sunday. They hammered their opponents from Bury 5-1 to progress into the semis. Crown currently sit third in the Premier Division, just one point ahead of Cheers, but the gulf in class was there for all to see on a beautiful Sunday morning. Ryan Carden opened the scoring and then produced a wonder goal, caught on camera by Heywood Sport. He stormed down the middle and outpaced the visiting defence before unleashing a rocket of a left-foot…

Jimmies Enjoy home comforts as victory boosts fight against relegation

Chris Nuttall hit a quality winner as Heywood St James came from behind to beat Wythenshawe Amateurs at Phoenix Park on Saturday. But it was Mike Wetherilt who was the real hero of the day for Jimmies, scoring once and setting up both the other goals in a 3-2 victory that improves their chances of avoiding relegation from the Premier Division of the Manchester Football League. The burly front man and strike partner Nuttall complimented each other well early on, their mixture of pace, brawn and guile causing the home defence some problems. It was no surprise when Jimmies took…

Missed Chances Cost battling Celtic Firsts dear

Missed chances was the story of the day as Hooley Bridge Celtic firsts went down 3-1 to Old Trafford in the Lancashire and Cheshire Amateur League. Their last-gasp winner last week against South Manchester had given them some breathing space in their fight against relegation, and they were look Chorltonians – their main rivals for the second relegation spot – could only draw at Old Stretfordians. Liam Mott scored Hooley’s goal but they were 2-1 down going into the final 30 minutes. First Ellis Risdale missed a great chance when through one-on-one with the visiting keeper, then Richard Fitton –…
