Queen’s Park

Queen's Park

Queen’s Park is the jewel in Heywood’s crown. It has been cleaned up and refurbished in recent years, with a great cafe, play area and plenty of well-maintained open space. The history of the park is as follows. In 1873 Martin J Newhouse, a wealthy Heywood merchant, died without making a will. A sum of £10,000 was then passed to Queen Victoria who gave the money to the people of Heywood. After much deliberation, the Heywood board decided on a park for the town and Queen’s Park was created. The original park was restricted to 20 acres, known locally as…

The Tanners, Rochdale Road East

January 10, 2013
The Tanners, Rochdale Road East, Heywood

The Tanners Rating: 4.5/5 Premium Lager (and cost): San Miguel, £2.90 (£2.30 during set hours of the day) I’d been in the Tanners, on Rochdale Road East and the corner of  Wild Street, just once before the past few months, many moons ago on a quiz night. For some reason I thought it had closed. So as I have been living nearby, I thought it was worth a look. And I couldn’t have been happier. It’s exactly what you hope it will be from the outside. A nice, dark front room and two better lit rooms. A great landlady in…

Celtic Thirds Overcome Bad Start To Beat Parrswood

Celtic Thirds Overcome Bad Start To Beat Parrswood

Hooley Bridge Celtic 3rds overcame a poor start to win a thriller against Parrswood Celtic 3rds on the top pitch at Heywood Leisure Centre. The visitors scored an early goal as veteran Jon Lumb’s usually well-marshalled defence had a shocker. But Ryan Carden equalised with a typically well-taken goal before Parrswood took the lead again. Aston Roger scored the first of two as he outpaced the visiting defence to make it level at the break. Parrswood only came with 11 men and the second period saw them falter. Carden and Roger scored their second and Celtic cruised to a 4-2…

Poor Celtic Reserves Go Down At Home To Valiant

January 6, 2013
A rogue dog caused a halt to play - and a popped ball

Hooley Bridge Celtic seconds put in a dreadful performance at home to Manchester Valiant 1st XI. The gulf between the two sides was evident, although at 1-0 down at the break Celtic were still in with a chance at Heywood Leisure Centre. But it looked as though none of the team had played with each other and they were totally outplayed by a good opposition team. They conceded two more goals in the second period, and as Billy Hilton said, the Christmas festivities seemed to have weighed heavy on the Hooley side. They remain seventh in the table, but have…

Diamond’s The Geezer As Jimmies Gain First Win

September 12, 2012

BY DENNIS BOOTH: The absence of regular management team John Barlow and Danny Dyson didnt stop Jimmies from recording their first victory of the season at Phoenix Park last Saturday as “stand-ins” Mick Grogan and Andy Nuttall led their charges to a battling 3-1 win over East Manchester. Neither side were at their best on a boiling hot afternoon but Jimmies, after going behind on 20-minutes, showed greater resilience and gradually gained the upper hand. Unfortunately neither Mike Weatherilt or Chris Nuttall – Jimmies leading scorers over the years – had their shooting boots on and, as hard as they…

Jimmies Grab First Point Of Season

September 3, 2012

BY DENNIS BOOTH: Heywood St James 1st XI grabbed their first point of the season on Saturday with a 1-1 draw at home to Wythenshawe. Simon Carney’s late equaliser was well deserved by Jimmies, who were trailing to a first-half strike from the visitors. There was plenty of action at both ends and Jimmes were left ruing the many chances they failed to take. The second XI have failed to build on a good start to the season. They won their first game 6-1 at Atherton Town, but since fell to heavy defeats at Hollinwood and at Irlam Steel. To…

Smith Pulls Strings As Hooley Start Off With A Victory

Smith Pulls Strings As Hooley Start Off With A Victory

Marcus Smith revelled in his new role as Hooley Bridge Celtic skipper, producing a magnificent performance as they recorded an opening day 3-2 victory over Hazel Grove in the Lancashire and Cheshire Amateur League Premier Division. Smith pulled the strings for his side from midfield, scoring the first and providing perfect passes for the other two. It was a quiet first half at Heywood Leisure Centre, although most of the threats came from Hooley, mainly through Ellis Ridsdale and the abundant skills of Martyn Bennett. However, it wasn’t until just after the break that Hooley opened the scoring and it…

Jimmies Look For First Points After AVRO Defeat

THANKS TO DENNIS BOOTH: Heywood St James look to get their first points of the season when they take on Walshaw Sports at Phoenix Park today. They lost their first game of the Manchester Football League Premier Division season at home to AVRO last week, but it was a spirited performance from a young side as they lost 3-2. Jimmies went behind after 10 minutes, Young scoring with a free header from a corner. Weatherilt equalised 10 minutes later, the Jimmies goal machine on the spot to knock in a rebound. Then, six minutes into the second half, Aaron Nuttall…

Jimmies Slip Up To Face Anxious Cup Wait

Jimmies Slip Up To Face Anxious Cup Wait

REPORT BY DENNIS BOOTH: Heywood St James slipped up at Phoenix Park last Saturday in their latest group game in the Myles Kenyon Cup Competition. Leading 2-0, through fine efforts from Gary Stanley and Aaron Nuttall, the Jimmies allowed a sprightly Radcliffe Town far too much room and duly paid the price finding themselves 2-3 behind with little time remaining. A late flurry saw Lee Weatherilt on the spot to stab home the equalising goal but a 3-3 draw may not be enough to see Jimmies into the next round of games Jimmies are still awaiting a competition ruling on their outstanding group…

Classy Cass Bangs Four As Lion Win At A Canter against Horse and Farrier

Classy Cass Bangs Four As Lion Win At A Canter against Horse and Farrier

White Lion enjoyed a comfortable victory in their pre-season clash with Horse and Farrier on Saturday. Dodging the weather on a very grassy Siddal Moor pitch, Lion were far too good for their opponents from Norden, running out 9-3 winners. Star of the show in terms of goals was Ste Cass, who scored four, while there were also two apiece from Nathan Bates and Lewis Kershaw and one from Matt Baker. Man of the match went to Rhys Lewis. It was a gentle start to the season, but the number of subs and enthusiasm from the Rochdale Alliance league side…

Jimmies Back, In The Top Flight And Raring To Go

Jimmies Back, In The Top Flight And Raring To Go

BY DENNIS BOOTH: Heywood St James AFC have commenced training in preparation for yet another season in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League Premier Division. After finishing 3rd bottom last season, Jimmies were expecting relegation back into the First Division but Premier Division Club West Didsbury and Chorlton have had their application to enter the North West Counties League accepted, which means that Jimmies will stay in the Premier Division. It is fair to say that Jimmies found it tough last season in a Division that involves many clubs good enough to play football at a higher level and it…
