The Kings, Market Place

The Kings, Market Place

Rating: 2/5 Premium Lager/ cost: Kronenberg £2.60 There’s a stench of desperation in the air in The Kings, Market Place,  at 3.30pm on a Thursday. Don’t get me wrong, I’m in there so I can’t be much better but at least I have an excuse. Old men hugging each other as they leave, grey coats, the racing on, poor music, tracky bottoms. Full of people who can’t find work or won’t find work. The pub itself may once have been nice – I certainly preferred the Freemasons back in the day – but the décor has been treated badly by…

Be Vigilant And Thwart Cold-Weather Thieves

January 18, 2013

Police are asking motorists in Heywood to be extra vigilant on icy mornings to keep criminals out in the cold. During previous winters cars have been stolen across the region after being left with the keys in the ignition and engines running while defrosting them. With low temperatures expected to continue throughout the winter, police are urging motorists to ensure that they are not the next victims to be left out in the cold by simply staying with their vehicle while defrosting them. It may mean sitting in a cold car for a few minutes but it’s a lot better…

Hoyas, Rochdale Road East

Rating: 4.5/5 Superb Chinese from Hoyas on Rochdale Road East! I don’t spend a lot on takeaways, but as I’d had a few and been away for a few days it was a treat. And boy, was it. I settled down to a pint of lager while awaiting hot and sour soup (always on my list) and David, the manager’s recommendation of char siu pork in black bean sauce “if I wanted something spicy”. Absolutely delicious. Fresh tasting and cooked perfectly. It’s not cheap as it is primarily a restaurant and you pay restaurant prices. And they don’t deliver. And…

Hooley Bridge And Jimmies At Home Saturday

Hooley Bridge Celtic will be looking to make it back-to-back wins when they host Bedians on Saturday. Bedians are Hooley Bridge’s nearest rivals in the league, sitting one point and one position above them in the Lancs and Cheshire AFL Premier Division. Hooley Bridge fought back brilliantly last week to beat South Manchester 3-1 from 1-0 down, a win they really needed to open a gap between themselves and the relegation contenders. The reserves travel to rock-bottom Droylsden JFC in Division 3, while the thirds host Old Stretfordians on the second pitch at Heywood Leisure Centre. Heywood St James are…

Hooley Bridge Celtic Seconds Bounce Back, Stylishly

Hooley Bridge Celtic seconds bounced back to form with a 4-2 defeat of Trafford United at the Heywood Leisure Centre on Saturday. They were well beaten last week by Manchester Valiant, but were better for the extra focus and were too good for their opponents. Goals came from regular keeper John Ogden, presumably shoved up for a bit of bulk, John Harding and Mick and Paul Burke. It was a performance summed up in one word by stalwart Billy Hilton. “Pragmatic.” Ogden was forced into emergency service as a striker as Ste Keogh strained a muscle warming up and therefore…
