Heywood Rangers beat Copperpot in an amazing Denis John Trophy final at Phoenix Park on Easter Monday.

In front of a big crowd enjoying a day off, the two teams fought out a thriller. The game went down to penalties, where Rangers’ keeper Rawlinson proved himself the hero as he saved three spot-kicks to make it 3-1 to the Heywood side after the shoot-out, with the game having finished 2-2 after normal time and penalties.

If this wasn’t entertainment enough, there were also six players dismissed on a busy afternoon for the ref, five on the pitch and one the Copperpot substitute.

The game was tough but fair with Rangers goals coming from Adam Davies and Tom Stubbs.

But the game erupted to the delight of the crowd with 10 minutes to go in the first period, when a seemingly innocuous challenge led to more than a dozen players getting involved. The ref sent a player apiece off and also a Copperpot sub, who stormed on to the pitch and had to be restrained before things got out of hand.

But there was plenty more rough and tumble as three more players were sent off.

The game went into extra time and Rawlinson showed his brilliance in the final seconds of extra-time to take it into penalties.

The rest as they say is history.
