Second-half goals from Dave Kilcourse and Steve Hutchinson helped Duke of Wellington to a comfortable 2-0 defeat of AFC Salem in their FJ Williams Cup clash at Heywood Leisure Centre on Sunday.

The conditions can’t have been any more different to the previous day, although the heavy conditions made good football difficult.

Duke looked to have far too much bite and craft for their visitors from Oldham, and it was a miracle they didn’t score at least twice in the first period, once hitting the crossbar from long range and on another occasion the visiting keeper pulling off a couple of miracle stops with the goal seemingly at Duke’s mercy.

With Lee Bates masterful at the back from Duke, there was little threat to Mikey Grogan’s goal and it was no surprise when Kilcourse’s predatory instincts took over as he put his side ahead.

Duke continued to press and late on Hutchinson claimed the important second goal that put his side through.
