Jimmies Blow Great Start As Royton Hit Them Hard

February 5, 2013

Neil McNultyREPORT from Dennis Booth: Lying next to bottom of the Manchester Football League Premier Division, Heywood St James First Team entertained Royton Town at Phoenix Park last Saturday afternoon hoping that a change in fortune might bring some a welcome three points.

Within four minutes of the start, Jimmies were gifted a goal when the Royton keeper miskicked a back pass allowing Chris Nuttall a simple tap in.

Just five minutes later the returning Mike Weatherilt made it 2-0 with a trademark free-kick from 25 yards. What a start!

But what happened next?

Jimmies suddenly began a period of rash tackling, conceding free-kicks in dangerous areas and they paid the penalty when Royton scored three times in 15 minutes to take a 3-2 lead.

Two of the Royton goals came from superbly executed free-kicks, the other from a brilliant dribble and finish by the Royton number seven.

Quite amazingly the second half failed to produce any further goals, mainly due to the brilliance of each goalkeeper in stopping everything thrown at them in a half of good football that flowed from end to end.

Jimmies valiant efforts went unrewarded-and having only one substitute didn’t help!

Despite the hard work of Scott Hardy, Andrew Tinker, Chris Nuttall and the half-fit Mike Weatherhilt, plus the sterling performance of goalkeeper Neil McNulty, Jimmies could not salvage anything from a game that Royton Town deserved to win.

An entertaining game was somewhat marred by an incident in the 40th minute when two streakers chose to run the length of the pitch and back.
It was difficult to tell if they were male or female-the weather being that cold!

Jimmies Second Team travelled to Chapel Town and, after holding a 1-0 lead, failed to last out the game to lose 1-4, again a problem being a lack of any substitutes.
