Heywood St James were thrashed by Leigh Athletic

By Dennis Booth: Heywood St James First Team went down to a heavy 7-3 defeat against fellow relegation candidates Leigh Athletic at Phoenix Park last Saturday afternoon.

Jimmies had already beaten Leigh at their place, 4-1, back in October and were looking to repeat that victory to put some “daylight” between the two clubs.

However things didn’t quite go to plan as the visitors had a physical presence that was to prove instrumental in bringing the home side to their knees with a powerful display of forceful football.

Jimmies, thanks to a superbly struck shot from skipper Scott Hardy, led after 22 minutes, and retained that advantage until the 43rd minute when, from a corner, the lanky Leigh centre-half headed home from six yards.

From the restart Jimmies lost possession, Leigh broke away and it was 1-2! To be fair to the visitors, they deserved to be in front.

The lesson from those last two first half  ”mad minutes” was not heeded by the shaken Jimmies players as within five minutes of the resumption they found themselves 1-4 behind-thanks to some sloppy defending.

Scott Hardy and Chris Nuttall combined smartly with a reply that reduced the deficit but Leigh again took advantage of slack marking to open a four goal gap.
With disgruntled, and cold, spectators seeking the warmth of the “hut” or going home with five minutes remaining, the game closed in the most explosive manner.

Chris Nuttall scored to make it 3-6 then should have made it 4-6 but his angled drive hit the ‘keeper before a Leigh forward raced away to crash home a super seventh to complete this “ten goal thriller”.

The Second Team travelled to play Wilmslow Albion and they were well beaten by six goals to one.

Altogether it was a sad day for everyone connected with Heywood St James AFC as earlier everyone was informed of the death of long time supporter of the Club, Trevor ” Egger” Jones , a most generous man and friend of many, an amazing character who will be sadly missed.
