BY DENNIS BOOTH: The absence of regular management team John Barlow and Danny Dyson didnt stop Jimmies from recording their first victory of the season at Phoenix Park last Saturday as “stand-ins” Mick Grogan and Andy Nuttall led their charges to a battling 3-1 win over East Manchester.

Neither side were at their best on a boiling hot afternoon but Jimmies, after going behind on 20-minutes, showed greater resilience and gradually gained the upper hand. Unfortunately neither Mike Weatherilt or Chris Nuttall – Jimmies leading scorers over the years – had their shooting boots on and, as hard as they tried, they could not trouble the visitors’ goalkeeper .

Jimmies eventually drew level with a stunning volley from Jamie Diamond after 40 minutes.

After a half-time lecture the Jimmies players upped the tempo and, with the visitors wilting in the heat of the afternoon, it was no surprise when the locals went ahead. The goal came in the 75th minute and again it came from the boot of Jamie Diamond – a fierce shot ripping into the back of the net.

Gary Stanley was brought on and his cross was turned past the East Manchester keeper by the predatory Chris Nuttall to extend Jimmies lead which, despite some late defensive slips, they managed to hang on to, making Mssrs Grogan and Nuttall two happy lads.

Man of the Match was Jamie Diamond.
