Lee Howard hit a stunning late winner as Hooley Bridge Celtic 1sts got back to winning ways at Heywood Leisure Centre on Saturday.

Howard curled a right-foot effort past Old Stretfordians’ keeper to give his side a well-deserved 2-1 home victory.

It followed a magnificent run by midfield maestro Ben Tanner, who ghosted through the Stretfordians’ defence to give Howard the chance to seal a famous victory.

Manager Norman Kenyon admitted before the game it was tough times for a young Hooley side. He expected a tough clash against a team who had recently hammered an in-form Beidians side.

So it proved as no side were able to gain the upper hand. But Hooley were always threatening going forward and thoroughly deserved the lead given them by Paul Burke.

A corner from the right was half-cleared by the visitors and the resulting cross found Burke lurking at the far post unmarked. He headed coolly home to give Hooley a 1-0 lead.

The visitors did not take long to hit back, though, as a header from a corner was deflected in by the unfortunate Tanner.

The game turned scrappy for long periods and a draw looked on the cards.

But Howard’s late goal brought joy to the home support and gave Hooley a thoroughly deserved victory.

It leaves them two points above the relegation zone in the Lancashire and Cheshire Amateur League Premier Division.
