Celtic Sunk By Bedians Wonder Strikes

March 7, 2013

BILLY0941Two wonder goals sealed Hooley Bridge Celtic’s fate at home to Bedians on Saturday.

They went down to a 3-2 defeat against a side who are also in a battle at the bottom of the table, and once again it was frailties at the back that cost Celtic at Heywood Leisure Centre.

They were missing first-choice centre backs, which meant striker Ellis Ridsdale had to be pressed into action, while there were call-ups for the enthusiastic Billy Hilton and Mikey Grogan.

This left Celtic even smaller than usual and despite captain Marcus Smith battling hard in midfield against a bigger team, it just was never going to be enough.

Celtic made a few chances and the visiting keeper pulled off some excellent saves, but they went 2-0 down – one of them a 25-yard screamer that gave Grogan no chance, the other from a set piece – before their efforts paid off when a scramble from a corner led to an own goal.

At 2-1 – and with man of the match Hilton urging his team forward – Celtic pushed for the equaliser but they failed to close the same man down who had earlier scored the rocket and he punished them with a similarly impressive striker.

Ellis Ridsdale brought it back to 3-2 but there was little time left and Celtic couldn’t get the equaliser.

The result leaves them a point below Bedians, third bottom of the Lancs and Cheshire Amateur League Premier Division, with a home game against third-placed Spurley Hey to come on Saturday.
