Jimmies Back, In The Top Flight And Raring To Go

BY DENNIS BOOTH: Heywood St James AFC have commenced training in preparation for yet another season in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League Premier Division. After finishing 3rd bottom last season, Jimmies were expecting relegation back into the First Division but Premier Division Club West Didsbury and Chorlton have had their application to enter the North West Counties League accepted, which means that Jimmies will stay in the Premier Division. It is fair to say that Jimmies found it tough last season in a Division that involves many clubs good enough to play football at a higher level and it…

Heywood St James 2 Springhead 4: Unlucky Jimmies Relegated Despite Gritty Display

BY DENNIS BOOTH: Heywood St James AFC First XI suffered a double defeat last week and, as a result, were relegated from the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League Premier Division. After the 0-1 defeat at the hands of West Didsbury and Chorlton the previous Saturday, Jimmies hosted Oldham-based Springhead last Saturday and, despite a plucky performance, Jimmies again had little luck losing 4-2. With only one league game remaining Jimmies are rock bottom and will return to the First Division. A Mike Weatherilt penalty and a late Chris Nuttall cracker came too late in a game that saw splendid performances by…

Hooley Secure Survival With Great Away Victory

Hooley Bridge Celtic confirmed their place in the top flight of the Lancashire and  Cheshire Amateur League with a 2-1 victory at Chorltonians. The victory leaves them six points clear of Hazel Grove with the Stockport team having two games to go and one in hand of Hooley. However, goal difference is so in favour of the Heywood side that only a ridiculous couple of results can see Celtic overhauled.

Heywood St James 0 West Didsbury and Chorlton 1: Jimmies Face Two Crucial Home Games After Wests Defeat

Heywood St James stay in the bottom two of the Manchester Football League after a poor display at Phoenix Park against West Didsbury and Chorlton. Missing Mike Wetherilt, Jimmies’ main threat came from Andy Nuttall but the nervous home side couldn’t create enough chances and inevitably went 1-0 down shortly after the break, and were unable to hit back. It leaves them level on points with AFC Bury with two league games left, at home to Springhead on Saturday and then at home to AVRO the week after.

Rampant Seconds Keep Hooley Title Challenge (Just) On Track

Marcus Smith’s hat-trick and a double from Chris Roach kept Hooley Bridge Celtic 2nds push for league glory alive at Heywood Leisure Centre on Saturday. They hammered Fletcher Moss 7-0 in a game that was reduced to a stroll after the visiting side’s aggressive midfielder was shown two yellows in 30 seconds after criticising the referee’s decision. He then proceeded to threaten to ‘smash your face in’ to the referee as he walked off the pitch. Roach had put Hooley ahead by the stage and from then on it was a walk in the park. The other goals came from…

Seconds Rock Phoenix Park With Four Goal Show

With the first team having no game, the spotlight fell on Heywood St James Reserves recently when they hosted second in table Hollinwood Reserves – and they didn’t disappoint. Jimmies started brightly and went in front through Joe Wilshere, who got on the end of James Sweatman’s superb low cross. Twenty minutes later Jimmies doubled their lead, Jay Benson hammering home a loose ball. Kyle Warwick added a third on the stoke of half-time when he powered home a header from Sweatman’s corner. The second half was more even but the visitors failed to trouble Chris Booth in Jimmies’ goal.…

Six Off, But Heywood Rangers Hold Nerve to Claim Cup Triumph

Heywood Rangers beat Copperpot in an amazing Denis John Trophy final at Phoenix Park on Easter Monday. In front of a big crowd enjoying a day off, the two teams fought out a thriller. The game went down to penalties, where Rangers’ keeper Rawlinson proved himself the hero as he saved three spot-kicks to make it 3-1 to the Heywood side after the shoot-out, with the game having finished 2-2 after normal time and penalties. If this wasn’t entertainment enough, there were also six players dismissed on a busy afternoon for the ref, five on the pitch and one the…

Dismal Seconds Put In A Tame Performance

Hooley Bridge Celtic seconds stayed top of Division A of the Lancashire and Cheshire League despite a dismal performance at home to Spurley Hey on Saturday at Queen’s Park. They went down to a 3-0 defeat and never threatened the visitors in the second period. However, they are still ahead of Cheadle Hulme Villa on goal difference, although the South Manchester team do have a game in hand.
