Celtic Sunk By Bedians Wonder Strikes

Two wonder goals sealed Hooley Bridge Celtic’s fate at home to Bedians on Saturday. They went down to a 3-2 defeat against a side who are also in a battle at the bottom of the table, and once again it was frailties at the back that cost Celtic at Heywood Leisure Centre. They were missing first-choice centre backs, which meant striker Ellis Ridsdale had to be pressed into action, while there were call-ups for the enthusiastic Billy Hilton and Mikey Grogan. This left Celtic even smaller than usual and despite captain Marcus Smith battling hard in midfield against a bigger…

Late Goal Stuns Brave Jimmies In Ten-Goal Thriller

Heywood St James First Team entertained Manchester Gregorians at Phoenix Park last Saturday still looking for a victory that would move them up the league table. Lying next to bottom of the Manchester League Premier Division, Jimmies have not won a game, nor earned a point, since a 4-1 victory at Leigh Athletic on Saturday 27 October 2012. For 15 minutes of last Saturday afternoon’s game Jimmies were ripped apart by the quick Gregs forwards and could have conceded two or three goals but for the agility of keeper Neil Mcnulty. But two goals in three minutes saw Jimmies take…

Exciting Celtic Survive Late Scare To Vanquish Stretfordians

Hooley Bridge Celtic’s multi-pronged forward line was too strong for Old Stretfordians at Heywood Leisure Centre. The attacking spearhead of Ellis Ridsale, Martyn Bennett and Johnny Lynch scored four of Hooley Bridge’s five goals as they moved out of the bottom three of the Lancashire and Cheshire Amateur League Premier Division after an entertaining 5-3 victory. It was 2-1 at  half-time thanks to goals from Bennett and the experienced Marcus Smith (from the penalty spot) but the bigger Stretfordians side were always a threat to the more skillful but at times lightweight home side. The game ebbed and flowed in…

Duke Held At Home By Wardleworth

The Duke drew 2-2 with Wardleworth in the cup last week. In awful conditions at Heywood Leisure Centre, there was never any chance of much football being played but both sides stuck to the task well and there were few bad tackles in the mud. Duke’s goals came from Dave Kilcourse and Andy Mullen. Tomorrow they travel to Highfield.

Crown FC v Unsworth Pictures

Crown came through a stormy clash with Unsworth at Bowlee last week to earn a 5-3 victory. Tackles flew from the off in this game, and after one tough tackle too many skipper Andrew Fletcher was dismissed. In wet conditions this may have been harsh, but once Crown settled down they were always the better footballing team and deserved their win. They now lie in third place in the Bury Sunday League, behind Heaton United and Waggonmakers. This weekend they travel to Radcliffe Town.

Jimmies Blow Great Start As Royton Hit Them Hard

REPORT from Dennis Booth: Lying next to bottom of the Manchester Football League Premier Division, Heywood St James First Team entertained Royton Town at Phoenix Park last Saturday afternoon hoping that a change in fortune might bring some a welcome three points. Within four minutes of the start, Jimmies were gifted a goal when the Royton keeper miskicked a back pass allowing Chris Nuttall a simple tap in. Just five minutes later the returning Mike Weatherilt made it 2-0 with a trademark free-kick from 25 yards. What a start! But what happened next? Jimmies suddenly began a period of rash tackling,…

Hooley Thumped As Angry Howard Sees Red

Hooley Thumped As Angry Howard Sees Red

Hooley Bridge Celtic were well beaten by a powerful Whalley Range side at Heywood Leisure Centre on Saturday. The reigning Lancashire and Cheshire Amateur League champions were too physical for Hooley, who were missing some key players – including the inspirational Marcus Smith – as they went down to a 3-0 defeat. Cards were issued with abandon by referee Phil Heaps, and most of them went to the visitors. However, the most notable moment of indiscipline came with the clash between Lee Howard and the visiting keeper. The pair challenged for the ball with Hooley only 2-0 down at this…

Don’t Ignore Cervical Screening Tests

Nearly a quarter of women in Heywood and Rochdale are risking cervical cancer by ignoring regular cervical screening tests. Health chiefs at NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale are urging women to have cervical screening after more than 1800 women snubbed invitations last year. Women in England and Wales between 25 and 64-years-old are invited to cervical screening (also known as smear tests) every three to five years. With Cervical Cancer Prevention Week currently running from January 21, women are being reminded that every day nine women are diagnosed and three women die of cervical cancer in the UK. Dr Helen…

The Newmarket Hotel, Hind Hill Street

The Newmarket Hotel, Hind Hill Street

Rating: 2.5/ 5 Premium lager/ cost: None (bog standard stuff) I get the feeling The Newmarket Hotel might once have been a belting pub. It’s got a huge room next to the smaller bar area, and when Heywood was a thriving little town full of industry, I bet it was a cracker. Now, like so many others in Heywood, it’s the haunt of people with so little to do. I know, I have been, and at times still am, one. It’s not that it’s unpleasant, just characterless. The beer’s cheap, as you may expect, and as you may expect, it…
